MCP Roots: What They Are and Why They Are Deprecated

Roots were designed to let a client expose workspace boundaries such as directories or files to a server. They helped a server understand where it was allowed to operate.

2026 status

Roots are deprecated as of MCP 2026-07-28. They remain functional during the deprecation window, but new implementations should not build new architecture around them.

Recommended alternatives

The MCP maintainers recommend explicit tool parameters, resource URIs, server configuration, or environment/configuration mechanisms. These alternatives make boundaries explicit instead of depending on the older client-to-server roots request pattern.

If you maintain a legacy server: keep compatibility if your clients need it, but plan migration rather than expanding roots usage.
